SUBJECT:

Lab Animal Per Diem Rate Changes

Boston University manages its animal facilities as efficiently as possible to keep animal rates affordable. We annually review costs and charges to Principal Investigators (PIs) who use our Animal Science Center (ASC) to establish competitive rates while remaining fiscally responsible.

Below are the new animal rates for both the Charles River and Medical campuses effective September 1, 2017. The uniform pricing reflects increasing numbers of faculty who collaborate across the University campuses.

Boston University subsidizes the costs of animal housing as part of its investment in the research enterprise. The table below shows the University subsidized cost charged to BU PIs for federal grants, as well as the full cost of the per diems for the individual species.

Subsidized rates are only for research funded by federal, foundation, or private grants that carry the full BU-negotiated facilities and administrative (F&A) rate. The full direct cost rates must be used for foundation grants that do not carry the full BU negotiated F&A rate as per recent AAU and BU responses to NIH threats to decrease F&A rates. Please note that all industry sponsored research awards must pay the full, unsubsidized cost, so please plan accordingly when submitting industry proposals.

Please note these rates are exclusive of BSL-3 and BSL-4 research within the NEIDL.

ASC has also revised its special services rates. The per diem housing rates above include basic housing, bedding, feed, routine husbandry, and cage changes. They also include routine health care including emergency and self-injury care, daily vet and vet tech rounds, and routine dental care.

Any additional care that is required due to the research protocol is considered a special service and is charged separately. For example, this includes, but is not limited to, special husbandry requests, emergency care related to research activities, and additional cage changes. As these rates have not been updated in several years, the ASC has created a new rate structure for both the Medical and Charles River campuses effective September 1, 2017.
