Memo: Summer Salary Request Forms Due May 15

TO: Charles River Campus Faculty, Deans, Associate Deans, and Financial Administrators
FROM: Gloria Waters, Vice President and Associate Provost for Research
Maureen O’Rourke, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs
DATE: April 21, 2020
SUBJECT: Summer Salary Request Forms Due May 15

As summer approaches, it’s once again time for Charles River Campus faculty with nine-month appointments and their administrators to review the Summer Effort and Summer Salary Policy and take action as needed. This policy supports faculty and staff in maintaining compliance with federal and University requirements for effort allocation, compensation, and reporting.

BACKGROUND
Faculty with nine-month academic appointments are permitted to expend up to an additional two months of compensated effort during the summer months and earn up to two months (2/9ths) of additional salary for that effort from sponsored projects, subject to sponsor policies and the terms and conditions of the related awards.

A faculty member may request permission to earn more than two months (2/9ths) of compensation during the months June, July, and August, up to a maximum of three full months (3/9ths), supported by sponsored projects, by filling out the Summer Salary Request Form.

The full policy and FAQs can be found on the Research Support site.

ACTION REQUIRED
The Summer Salary Request Form should be completed by departments for all nine-month faculty taking greater than 2/9ths summer salary. Faculty should work with the appropriate payroll administrator in each school or college to ensure accuracy of the salary distributions.

This form is reviewed and updated regularly, so please use the latest version provided. Completed forms are due to Stephen Brown at stbrown@bu.edu by Friday, May 15. Please contact your financial administrator for your school’s internal deadline.

Please note that the Summer Salary Request Form should be submitted in addition to the personnel activity reports distributed by Post Award Financial Operations.

Thank you for your attention to and cooperation with this important policy. Should you have questions or concerns, please contact Gretchen Hartigan in Post Award Financial Operations (617-353-4555) or Linda Martin in the Office of Research (617-358-6118).
