| SUBJECT: | Lab Animal Per Diem Rate Changes |
In order to ensure that Boston University is efficiently managing its animal facilities, the Animal Science Center (ASC) has worked with Internal Audit & Advisory Services, Budget & Planning, Institutional Research, and Post Award Financial Operations (PAFO) over the past year to complete a full financial review of its operations. As a result of this review, the ASC was able to reduce overall costs by $1.7 million through consolidation of animal housing space, reductions in staffing, a review of facilities factored into the F&A rate, and more accurate projections of anticipated use of the housing facility.
Below are the new animal rates for the Charles River and Medical Campuses (exclusive of the NEIDL), effective September 1, 2018.
Boston University subsidizes the costs of animal housing as part of its investment in the research enterprise. Costs are reviewed annually to establish competitive re-charge rates for PIs.
The tables below reflect the costs for the current fiscal year, FY19, as well as proposed costs for the next five years. Please use these projected costs when preparing proposal submission forms. The first table shows the University’s subsidized cost charged to BU PIs for federal grants with full overhead. The second chart reflects the full cost of the per diems for the individual species for unsubsidized research.
Subsidized rates are for research funded by federal, foundation, or private grants that carry the full BU-negotiated facilities and administrative (F&A) rate. The full direct cost rates must be used for foundation grants that do not carry the full BU negotiated F&A rate. Please note that all industry-sponsored research awards, as well as any startup or other non-sponsored funding sources must pay the full, unsubsidized cost; therefore, please plan accordingly when submitting proposals and funding requests.
